Bauxite and Alumina (B&A) is accountable for Rio Tinto Alcan's worldwide activities related to bauxite mining and refining into smelter-grade and specialty aluminas. The business unit employs approximately 6,000 people (incl. JVs, excl. contractors) in ten countries and owns and/or operates six bauxite mines and deposits, six smelter-grade alumina plants and six specialty alumina plants. B&A is a recognized leader and supplier of alumina refinery technology and has an extensive project pipeline which includes the expansion of operations in Australia and potential future development in Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Madagascar and Saudi Arabia.

Rio Tinto Alcan B&A currently has an opening for a Market Intelligence Analyst.

The principal function of this role is to support to the Manager Business Intelligence and Pricing and Commercial team on competitor and market analysis, market forecast and assist in the business evaluation of marketing opportunities. As this role is based in Montreal (with the broader Commercial leadership team based in Brisbane), there is an expectation that this role will be required to operate in an autonomous fashion.

Responsibilities:

· Run the industry supply and demand model for bauxite and alumina - this includes the gathering and critical review of available information in regards to competitors and markets and proactively identifying opportunities to improve on the model so that it is considered world class. The key challenges of this task are:

· The requirement to build and maintain highly effective networks of information, both formal (reports/professional groups/sourcing data from industry analysts ) and personal (with Commercial Directors, members of the commercial team, the wider Rio Tinto Alcan - e.g. Technical, Industry Analysis, Business Development and Primary Metals Group and the wider Rio Tinto Group - e.g. Rio Tinto Marine)

· The ability to critically review this information to make objective decisions on it's validity

· The ability to understand the importance of information on the basis of impacts on the market

· Provide recommendations and commentary to Manager Business Intelligence and Pricing and wider Commercial team on competitor activity, market insights and commentary

· Align market views with the Commercial Directors, Operational Excellence Teams, Business Development, Industry Analysis and Rio Tinto Economics

· Coordinate the bi-annual market intelligence conference including N-3 Commercial team, Operational excellence team, Rio Tinto Economics and Industry Analysis team

· Undertake market studies to initiate and support business opportunities as required

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in a social science, liberal arts or related discipline.

· Broad career role (3-5 years) with strong people interface in addition to technical specialty.

· Experience in and knowledge of the Bauxite & Alumina industry to process and deliver company optimization and market context

· Knowledge of commercial positioning and marketing/market intelligence

· Familiar with commodity market principles and dynamics

· Experience working in performance-driven teams

· Languages: English essential, French desirable

· Strong communication skills, capable of effectively communicating at all levels

· Commercial acumen, critical thinking and analysis

· Focused and results oriented, driven by excellence, change agent and highly autonomous

· Sound values with high integrity

· Sound understanding of the commercial drivers of the business

· Proven influencing and stakeholder engagement skills are strongly preferred

· Skills in NGO and government liaison and agreement making a plus
